Istanbul Police Station Attacked by Female Assailants
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Two female attackers hurled hand grenades and opened fire at a riot police headquarters in Istanbul on Thursday.
The attackers were thought to be trapped in a neighbouring building, in Istanbul's Bayrampasa district.
Armed police cordoned off the area.
There were no reports of any casualties in Thursday's attack.
An Al Jazeera reporter, reporting from southern Turkey, said the women attacked the police station and then tried to flee.
"They are now holed up in a neighbouring building. It is the latest in a series of attacks that have been rocking Istanbul and Ankara in recent months," the reporter said.
The motive of the attack was not immediately known.
Last month, 29 people were killed in a car bombing that targeted a military convoy in Ankara, which was claimed by the Kurdistan Freedom Falcons (TAK), who have been linked to the outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK).
In 2015, there were four deadly bomb attacks blamed on Daesh (ISIL) group, including the deadliest in Turkey's modern history that killed 103 people in Ankara in October.
There have also been sporadic attacks by the outlawed ultra-leftist Revolutionary People's Liberation Party-Front (DHKP-C).
