Funeral Held for 4 Iranian Commandos Killed in Syria
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Four commandos of Iran’s Army Ground Force Special Forces, who were martyred during an advisory mission in Syria’s Aleppo, were laid to rest on Tuesday.
The elite Iranian troops served at the Army Ground Force’s 65th Brigade, known as the Nohed Brigade or green berets.
Speaking to Tasnim on the sidelines of the funeral service in Tehran, Army Ground Force Commander Brigadier General Ahmad Reza Pourdastan said the force’s advisers are vigorously helping Syria along with the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) Quds Force advisers.
According to the commander, the four were killed in a large-scale raid launched by thousands of al-Nusra Front militants and other Takfiri terrorists south of Syria’s Aleppo.
During the clashes that led to the martyrdom of the four Iranian commandos, the terrorists suffered heavy casualties with 200 militants killed and a number of tanks and personnel carriers of the al-Nusra Front destroyed, Pourdastan explained.
Pourdastan then noted that Iran’s Army has not deployed a particular unit to Syria, but a number of advisers from different units, including the 65th Brigade, have been dispatched to the Arab country.
Iran, a close ally of Syria, has been supporting the legitimate Syrian government in the fight against terrorists.
Tehran has already made it clear that its assistance to Syria is confined to consultation and advisory help.
Syria has been mired in a civil war since 2011, with government forces fighting an assortment of militant groups, including the Daesh (ISIL) terrorists.
