High Turnout in Elections Sign of Syrians’ Strong Will: Official

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The head of Syria’s Supreme Judicial Elections Committee praised the high turnout in the Arab country’s recent parliamentary elections, saying it demonstrated the people’s strong determination to live a life of dignity.

Speaking to the Tasnim News Agency, Hisham al-Shaar pointed to the five-year-old conflict in Syria and said despite their difficult situation in the Arab country, the people proved their ability to live a normal life by their massive presence in the polls to elect their representatives in the parliament.

He commended the 57.56-percent turnout in the parliamentary votes held on Wednesday, saying that the participation was outstanding.

The Syrian official went on to say that those who won the elections are representatives of teh entire Syrian nation.

In last week's polls, as many as 3,500 candidates, including women, competed for a place in the 250-seat parliament.

The previous parliamentary elections had been held in 2012, just months after the adoption of a new constitution in the country.

The voting was held amid an ongoing war against terrorism throughout the Arab country, which has been gripped by a catastrophic civil war since 2011.

According to a February report by the Syrian Center for Policy Research, the conflict in Syria has claimed the lives of over 470,000 people.
