Iranian Envoy: West’s Double Standards Causing Discontent in Region

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran’s Ambassador to Russia Mehdi Sanaei censured certain Western countries for their double-standard approach toward terrorism, saying their policy has provoked discontent among Middle East nations.

Speaking at the International Likhachov Scientific Conference at St. Petersburg University of the Humanities and Social Sciences on Friday, Sanaei emphasized that the West is not supporting popular demands in some Middle East countries.

He further said the West’s double standards have provoked discontent among regional nations and governments.

The Iranian diplomat went on to say that foreign intervention in the internal affairs of some countries in the Middle East have deteriorated regional problems, adding that the problems should be addressed by regional countries not others.

The International Likhachov Scientific Conference at St. Petersburg University of the Humanities and Social Sciences was first held in May 1995. The conference was initiated by Dmitry Sergeyevich Likhachov and other professors at Saint Petersburg University.

After Likhachov passed away, writer DA Granin and professor AS Zapesotsky proposed that the conference should receive the official status of International Likhachov Scientific Conference, which was agreed by Russia President Vladimir Putin in May 2001, according to the conference’s official website.
