Iran, Lithuania Urge Development of Ties
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian President Hassan Rouhani called for efforts to expand relations with Lithuania in all fields.
“Given their capacities, Tehran and Vilnius need to diversify and enhance their relations,” President Rouhani said at a meeting with Lithuanian Foreign Minister Linas Linkevicius in Tehran on Saturday.
Iran and Lithuania have a lot to enhance and deepen mutual cooperation, and should properly tap into their potentials to open up a new chapter in bilateral relations, he added, calling for efforts to expand economic interaction, beyond mere trade ties.
President Rouhani also hailed the opportunities for stronger ties between Iran and the European Union members, including Lithuania, brought by the termination of anti-Iran sanctions under the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), a lasting nuclear deal between Tehran and the Group 5+1 (Russia, China, the US, Britain, France and Germany).
For his part, the visiting Lithuanian diplomat voiced his country’s willingness to broaden ties with Iran in all fields of mutual interest.
Pointing to a delegation of representatives from major Lithuanian companies accompanying him in the visit to Iran, Linkevicius said Vilnius and Tehran can share experiences in nanotechnology and biotechnology.
His visit comes against a backdrop of global enthusiasm for cooperation with Iran following the implementation of the JCPOA in January.
