Moderate Quakes Hit Southern, Southwestern Iran

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Two moderate earthquakes rattled Iran’s southern province of Hormozgan and the southwestern province of Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari.

According to Seismological center of the Geophysics Institute of Tehran University, an earthquake measuring 4.9 on the Richter scale jolted Fareghan District in Hormozgan Province on Thursday morning.

The quake struck 47 kilometers off Fareghan and 56 km from Bandar Abbas, at 04:28 am (local time), the data showed.

The epicenter was determined to be at 27.65 degrees north latitude and 56.48 degrees east longitude and at a depth of 17 km.

Also, a magnitude 4.4 earthquake rattled Ardal in Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari province at 11:15 pm (local time) on Wednesday.

There were no immediate reports of damage or casualties following the earthquakes.

Iran is one of the most seismically active countries in the world, being crossed by several major fault lines that cover at least 90% of the country. As a result, earthquakes in Iran occur often and are destructive.

The deadliest quake in Iran's modern history happened in June 1990. It destroyed the northern cities of Rudbar, Manjil and Lushan, along with hundreds of villages, killing an estimated 37,000 people.

Bam in the country’s southeastern province of Kerman witnessed a strong quake in December 2003 which killed 31,000 people.
