Britain Sends Warship to Gibraltar amid Tensions

TEHRAN (Tasnim) - Britain is sending a warship to Gibraltar later this month as diplomatic tensions increase with Spain over plans to charge people traveling to or from the British outpost.

HMS Westminster and two other ships will visit the territory, it emerged a day after David Cameron called his Spanish counterpart to discuss the situation at the border, Sky News reported.

The Ministry of Defence confirmed the deployment but said it was part of a "long-planned" training exercise.

Madrid has threatened to impose a 50 euro (£43.30) fee on every vehicle entering or leaving the Mediterranean outpost through its border with Spain.

Checks at the border have caused significant delays, with queues of several hours.

There have also been allegations that Gibraltar's creation of an artificial reef has damaged Spanish fishing grounds.
