Rouhani: Constructive Interaction Top on Iran’s Foreign Policy Agenda
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian new President Hassan Rouhani reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to pursue the policy of "constructive interaction" with other countries as a basis for Tehran's foreign policy.
Addressing Iranian lawmakers in the open session of parliament here in Tehran today, Rouhani briefed lawmakers on his administration’s basic principles of foreign policy, and stated that his administration will try to "create new opportunities for the country, remove threats and pursue policy of détente and mutual trust".
He also announced that his administration will pursue the policy of moderation in dealing with foreign countries and at the same time will safeguard Iranian national security.
The Iranian chief executive further emphasized the importance of elevating Iran’s global stance, and added, “The administration’s foreign policy will be based on safeguarding the national security, fulfilling national interests and serving the country's all-out and purposeful development.”
In relevant remarks in late June after his election as Iran’s new president, Rouhani had underlined the importance of “moderation” in all arenas, including foreign policy.
“Moderation in foreign policy means constructive interaction, not submission and confrontation,” the president stated at the time.
He had also urged interaction and dialog with other countries on an equal footing, based on mutual respect and one another’s interests, based on the bilateral removal of tensions in order to build mutual trust.
