Iranian Speaker Sympathizes with Italy over Deadly Quake

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani offered his condolences to the Italian nation over a recent earthquake that left at least 281 people dead in a mountainous area near the town of Norcia.

In a message to Italian Speaker of Chamber of Deputies Laura Boldrini on Saturday, Larijani expressed deep sorrow to the Italian people and government as well as the bereaved families of the victims over the tragic incident.

He further expressed the hope that the great nation of Italy would leave behind the difficult conditions by exercising patience.

Larijani also said the Iranian government and people will stand by the Italian nation in this hard time.

The strong earthquake struck a mountainous stretch of central Italy early Wednesday, killing at least 281 people and trapping scores under debris.

The tremor, which had a preliminary magnitude of 6.2, struck at 3:36 a.m., about 6.5 miles southeast of the town of Norcia in the Umbria region, followed by about 200 aftershocks over the next several hours.

Towns in three regions -Umbria, Lazio and Marche- have been devastated by the quake.
