Iran’s VP: Caspian Water Transfer Project under Consideration
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – A major project to channel water from the Caspian Sea to Iran’s central, arid province of Semnan is still under consideration, vice president and head of the Environmental Protection Organization of Iran, Masoumeh Ebtekar, said.
Speaking to the Tasnim News Agency on Wednesday, Ebtekar explained that special committees are regularly holding sessions to evaluate the project and conduct feasibility studies.
However, she noted, there is not still enough information to produce a final report, and the assessment process for a scientific conclusion is going on.
Iran’s administration is weighing plans on the giant water transfer project as a long-term solution to the water problems that Semnan Province is facing.
The Caspian Sea is the largest enclosed inland body of water in the world. Its coastline is 7,000 kilometers long and is bordered by Russia, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, Iran and Azerbaijan.
Lying in northern part of Iran, the province of Semnan has an area of more than 97,000 square kilometers.
The arid province which is mostly covered with deserts, is 65 kilometers away from the Caspian Sea at the shortest direct distance, while its southern borders are more than 300 kilometers away from the sea.
