Iran's President Urges End to Suppression of People in Egypt
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian President Hassan Rouhani deplored the growing tension in region, Egypt in particular, and called on the Egyptian army to stop suppressing people.
Speaking at the end of the parliament's debates on his cabinet members here in Tehran on Thursday evening, President Rouhani touched upon the tense political conditions across the Middle East, specifically in Egypt, and called on the Egyptian military not to suppress the “great and freedom-seeking nation” of Egypt.
“People’s path is path of democracy and Islam and the entire world should respect Egyptian people’s demands and we sympathize with them in the current conditions”, the Iranian president pointed out.
The Egyptian Health Ministry again raised the death toll from Wednesday's clashes between police and army forces and supporters of the country's ousted president to 578.
The ministry said that 3,717 others have also been wounded.
Wednesday's violence began when police moved to clear two sit-in camps in Cairo by supporters of Mohamed Mursi, ousted in a military coup on July 3.
The ministry said 202 of the dead were killed in the larger of the two camps, in Cairo's eastern Nasr City district.
The final toll is believed far higher as scores of bodies are not registered. Supporters of Mursi say more than 2,000 died.
The violence prompted the government to declare a nationwide, month-long state of emergency.
