Agreement with Oman Demarcates Iran’s Longest Maritime Boundary: Deputy FM
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran and Oman have exchanged papers related to an agreement signed last year that maps the exact location of their common sea borders, an Iranian deputy foreign minister said.
In a note released on Tuesday, Deputy Foreign Minister for Legal and International Affairs Abbas Araqchi described the agreement as “one of the main and most sensitive” accords with the Persian Gulf littoral neighbors, reached in a “historical development.”
The agreement, whose papers were exchanged during a visit last week by Omani Interior Minister Hamoud Bin Faisal al-Busaidi to Tehran, demarcates Iran’s longest maritime borders at the Sea of Oman, he noted.
According to Araqchi, the agreement was finalized after complicated and difficult negotiations on technical and legal issues.
Apart from outlining Iran-Oman common sea borders, the accord also defines each country’s share of “potential hydrocarbon resources” along the joint maritime borders, he said.
The diplomat also noted that the agreement, achieved within the framework of international principles, signifies Tehran and Muscat’s willpower to enhance bilateral ties and contribute to regional stability while certain countries are beating the drum for war and attempting to spread Iranophobia.
The agreement was signed in May 2015, when Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif paid a visit to Muscat.
“The agreement will make the ties (between the two countries) more institutionalized, serious, and profound,” Zarif said in a meeting with Oman’s minister of interior at the time.
