Iran's President Rouhani in New York for UN General Assembly session

TEHRAN (Tasnim) - Iranian President Hassan Rouhani is now in the US city of New York in a bid to attend the 71st annual session of the United Nations General Assembly.

Upon arrival at John F. Kennedy International Airport on Tuesday, President Rouhani was welcomed by Iran’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations Gholam Ali Khoshroo.

President Rouhani is accompanied by a high-ranking politico-economic delegation.

The Iranian president is scheduled to deliver a speech at the General Assembly session.

Also, Rouhani will hold talks with senior officials from other countries on the sidelines of the UN session.

The 71st session of the General Assembly is facing serious issues, including violence, terrorism, refugee crisis, climate change and nuclear proliferation.

Among the important topics on the agenda is Syria’s five-year foreign-backed militancy, which has so far claimed the lives of at least 300,000 people, according to the so-called Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

The worst refugee crisis in 70 years is also among the challenges that the UN members hope to tackle.
