MP Calls for Firm Int'l Action to End Egyptian Crisis

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – All countries are duty-bound to take serious action for the settlement of the recent tensions in Egypt, a senior Iranian lawmaker said.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran cannot stay silent and witness the indifference to Egypt’s regrettable developments and massacre of innocent people,” Chairman of Iranian Parliament's National Security and Foreign Policy Commission Alaeddin Boroujerdi told Tasnim today.

The Iranian legislator further called on all states to take “serious actions” to put an end to the violence in the Arab country.

Boroujerdi also deplored indecision and inaction of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) in the face of the current crisis in Egypt, saying the OIC has lost its relevance as it follows policies of certain countries.

The Iranian parliamentarian’s remarks came after tens of thousands of people took to the streets across Egypt in response to a call by the Muslim Brotherhood for nationwide protests on the ‘Friday of Rage’ (also ‘Day of Anger’) against the army and the interim government installed by it.

The security forces fired on the supporters of ousted President Mohamed Mursi, leaving at least 173 people dead and some 1,330 more injured across Egypt.

On Wednesday, Egypt launched a brutal crackdown on thousands of peaceful protesters in Cairo who were demanding the reinstatement of Mursi.

According to official figures, about 640 people were killed and hundreds of others injured in clashes between security forces and protesting people.
