Salehi: Safety Tops Iran’s N. Power Plant Program

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The observation of strict safety regulations is top on Iran's agenda in construction and maintenance of the country's nuclear power plants, Head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) Ali Akbar Salehi said.

“Ensuring the safety of the (Bushehr Nuclear Power) plant (BNPP) is the top priority and electricity generation comes next,” Salehi said on Sunday, addressing a ceremony to officially start his new job.

Iran’s President Hassan Rouhani appointed former Foreign Minister Salehi as vice-president and head of the AEOI on Thursday.

The opponents of Iran’s peaceful nuclear program have claimed that Iran's only nuclear power plant is a serious security concern for the littoral states on the Persian Gulf.

Both the Iranian experts and the Russian constructors of the BNPP have at times ensured the international community that the plant is compliant with stringent safety standards and the regulations of the Intarnational Atomic Energy Agency.
