Iran, Iraq Discuss Intelligence Collaboration
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Top security officials from Iran and Iraq weighed plans for cooperation in the intelligence sphere in the fight against terrorism.
Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) Ali Shamkhani and head of Iraq’s National Intelligence Service, Mustafa Kadhimi, held a meeting in Tehran on Sunday.
A range of issues were discussed in the gathering and Shamkhani expressed Iran’s readiness to share its “intelligence and security experience” in countering terrorism with Iraq.
“Establishment of sustainable security in Iraq is an unchanging priority of the Islamic Republic of Iran,” he stressed.
Shamkhani also emphasized that closer cooperation between Tehran and Baghdad and constant high-profile consultations between the two neighbors will foil hostile plots hatched to undermine Muslim countries.
For his part, Kadhimi described Iran’s success in combating terrorism and ensuring security as a testimony to its unmatched security model.
The Iraqi official also called for continued intelligence cooperation and concerted action by regional countries in order to root out terrorism.
Iran and Iraq have enjoyed growing ties ever since the overthrow of the former Iraqi dictator, Saddam Hussein, in 2003.
Iran has been also supporting the Arab nation in the fight against Daesh (ISIL of ISIS) since the terrorist group invaded Iraq in summer 2014.
