France Wants ICC to Investigate War Crimes in Syria

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – French Foreign Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault said that France intends to get in touch with the International Criminal Court (ICC) for consultations over how the investigation into the war crimes possibly committed in Syria can be launched.

Paris will turn to the International Criminal Court (ICC) for consultations over how the investigation into the war crimes possibly committed in Syria can be launched, French Foreign Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault said Monday.

"France intends to get in touch with the prosecutor with the aim to find out how the probe can be launched," Ayrault said, according to Sputnik.

On Saturday, Russia blocked the French draft UN Security Council resolution on the cessation of hostilities in Syria's Aleppo. The document received 11 votes in support, two votes against, while two more members of the Security Council abstained. Thus, Russia, which is one of the five permanent UN Security Council members, used its right for veto.

The following day, French President Francois Hollande said that residents of Syria's Aleppo had become victims of war crimes and urged to punish those, who were behind them.

Aleppo has been a battlefield between government forces, and numerous militant groups, including Jaish al-Islam, Ahrar ash-Sham and Jabhat Fatah al Sham, formerly known as the Nusra Front.

Fighting in the city of Aleppo intensified after the Syrian army declared an end to the week-long ceasefire on September 23, blaming militants for numerous violations that made the cessation of hostilities unreasonable.
