We Want to Defeat Iran in Tehran: Korean Coach Stielike

TEHRAN (Tasnim) - South Korea national football team's coach Uli Stielike said they will try to break a 42-year-old curse in Tehran when they face Iran in the upcoming World Cup qualifier on Tuesday.

“South Korea national team is here to play a fair play match. We will face Iran to win the game. South Korea has not defeated Iran in its away game so far but we want to make history by beating Iran at the Azadi Stadium,” Stielike said.

Stielike said things will be different this time, although the intimidating fan atmosphere at Azadi Stadium still could be a concern.

“We’ve already experienced this condition. Our players played against China in a full-packed stadium last month. Both teams have to respect each other,” Stielike said.

Both Iran and South Korea have seven points with two wins and a draw in Group A, where they are paired with Uzbekistan, Syria, China and Qatar. Iran, however, is the leader of the group with superior goal difference to South Korea.

South Korea has never won at Azadi Stadium in six trips, with only two draws and four losses. The Taeguk Warriors suffered a 1-0 loss in their last match in November 2014.
