EU Avoids Mentioning Syria-Related Sanctions against Russia

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The European Union did not include any mention of Syria-related sanctions against Russia into the document on the conclusions of the European Council summit in Brussels.

EU heads of state are meeting in Brussels for a two-day summit that started on Thursday.

"The European Council strongly condemns the attacks by the Syrian regime and its allies, notably Russia, on civilians in Aleppo. It calls on them to bring the atrocities to an end and to take urgent steps to ensure unhindered humanitarian access to Aleppo and other parts of the country," the document on external relations, published on the council's website, reads, Sputnik reported.

The EU leaders are calling for an immediate cessation of hostilities and resuming a "credible political process under UN auspices."

Earlier in the day, media reported that the leaders of the European Union member states were considering imposition of a new round of sanctions against Russia over the ongoing Syria crisis.
