Liberation of Iraq’s Districts from Daesh to Affect Syria Front Positively: Abadi

BAGHDAD (Tasnim) – Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi praised the ongoing operation to liberate the Arab country’s northern city of Mosul from Daesh (ISIS or ISIL) terrorist group and said the success of the operation would lead to the defeat of the militants in the neighboring country, Syria.

Speaking in a meeting with Head of the Strategic Research Center of Iran's Expediency Council Ali Akbar Velayati in Bagdad on Thursday evening, Abadi highlighted the “unprecedented” unity of various Iraqi groups and the army forces in the massive operation to liberate Mosul from Daesh militants and said the solidarity have increased the Iraqi nation’ power in the fight against Takfiris.

He further emphasized that this is the first time that the army troops, Peshmerga forces, Popular Mobilization Forces, volunteer Kurd and Sunni forces are siding with each other against Daesh terrorists.

Abadi pointed to the positive impact of the operation to liberate the last stronghold of Daesh in Iraq on the anti-terrorist campaign in Syria and said the liberation of the Iraqi districts from Daesh would strengthen Syria in its fight against terrorists.

The Iraqi army launched the offensive on October 16 aimed at wresting Mosul from the hands of Daesh.

Velayati, for his part, said the ongoing crisis in Iraq has its roots in the wrong policies of the US in the Middle East region.

The Iranian official, who is also an international advisor to Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei, added that Washington is seeking to create the “New Middle East” and weaken regional countries.

The term “New Middle East” was introduced to the world in June 2006 in Tel Aviv by then US secretary of state Condoleezza Rice in replacement of the older and more imposing term, the “Greater Middle East.”

Back in 2007, incumbent US Vice President Joe Biden also advocated a proposal for a three-way partition of Iraq.

Iraq has been the scene of clashes between military forces and the Daesh terrorists since the foreign-backed militants attacked the Arab country from Syria in summer 2014.
