Iran Denies Claims of Support for Taliban

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman denied claims that the Afghan Taliban enjoys support from Tehran, calling attention to the huge financial and spiritual costs Iran has incurred in its fight against terrorism so far.

Bahram Qassemi on Monday denied allegations of support for the Afghan Taliban, raised by the group’s spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid, as “a downright lie.”

He slammed the Taliban assertion as part of a plot masterminded by supporters of the terrorist group with the purpose of upsetting public opinion and inciting Iranophobia.

The forlorn attempt by the Taliban was aimed at distracting the world’s attention from Saudi Arabia’s crimes against the people of Yemen, the spokesman explained.

“Among the regional countries, the Islamic Republic of Iran has always had a leading role in the battle against terrorist groups,” he added.

Iranian officials have repeatedly highlighted the country’s regional role in the fight against terrorism which has plagued the entire world.

“Today, we are glad that Iran is a great defensive wall in the region against Daesh and al-Qaeda and is fighting off terrorism,” Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said in New York in September.
