Iran’s President Hails Peace Deal in Colombia

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian President Hassan Rouhani hailed a recent peace deal reached between the government of Colombia and the leftist FARC rebels, describing reconciliation and peace in any part of the world as a satisfactory achievement.

In a meeting with Colombia’s new accredited ambassador to Iran Juan Alfredo Pinto Saavedra, President Rouhani expressed satisfaction with the peace deal between the Bogota government and the FARC rebels, achieved after four years of negotiations.

Peace and friendship in any place in the world is a source of delight as “conflicts, wars and clashes only destroy human beings and communities,” the Iranian president added.

The recent peace deal in Colombia will end FARC rebels' insurgency, which dates back to 1964 and has killed some 220,000 people.

In a separate meeting on Monday, President Rouhani and Sierra Leone’s new ambassador to Iran, Almamy Camara, discussed the expansion of ties between Tehran and Freetown.

Highlighting the technical capabilities of Iranian companies, Rouhani voiced the country’s readiness to carry out development projects in the West African nation.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran welcomes enhancement and deepening of economic and cultural ties with Sierra Leone,” he said, adding that it is necessary to familiarize the private sectors of the two countries with each other’s capacities.

For his part,Camara voiced the African country’s determination to boost cooperation with Iran in a range of fields, as in the fight against terrorism.
