Iran’s Velayati Decries Advocates of Syria Talks with US

TEHRAN (Tasnim) - Ali Akbar Velayati, a senior adviser to Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei, criticized supporters of negotiations with the US on the regional issues, the Syrian crisis in particular, saying they are unaware of the US hostile nature or pretend to be so.

Speaking at a television talk show on Sunday night, Velayati strongly dismissed the notion that Iran needs to open negotiations with Americans and embark on something like the second version of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) in order to settle the crisis in Syria.

“Those making such comments (about talks with the US) either do not know the US or pretend to be unaware,” the former foreign minister explained.

He also noted that any signal for Iran to hold talks with the US is an indicator of “US being mired in the quagmire of Syria,” stressing that American will not hesitate a moment to deceive Iran.

The US will resort to any ploy to evade its commitments, in the same way that it failed to honor bulk of its undertakings under the JCPOA, Velayati underlined.

His comments came after Ayatollah Khamenei reiterated that negotiating with the US government will not resolve Iran’s problems, but will aggravate them.

The wrong and “very dangerous” notion that détente with the US would resolve Iran’s problems can be proved false with detailed reasoning, Ayatollah Khamenei underlined on Wednesday, referring to the US violations of the JCPOA, a lasting nuclear deal between Iran and world powers, as a glaring example of falsehood of that concept.
