Iran to Inaugurate Largest Gas Storage Facility in Coming Days

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran plans to inaugurate its largest natural gas storage facility in the coming days, an energy official said.

Managing Director of Iranian Natural Gas Storage Company (NGSC) Massoud Samivand announced on Saturday that the country’s biggest project for construction of a second gas storage facility will come on stream this week.

The new facility is located in Shorije, in Iran’s northeastern province of Khorassan Razavi.

It is also capable of storing up to 10 million cubic meters of natural gas per day.

Samivand also announced that the facility will be inaugurated in a special ceremony with President Hassan Rouhani in attendance.

In December 2012, Iran launched the first underground natural gas storage facility in Sarajeh region in the country's central province of Qom.

Iranian officials said at the time that a total of 12.5 million barrels of gas condensates have been stored in Qom's Sarajeh underground storage facility.

Earlier, Managing-Director of National Iranian Gas Company (NIGC) Javad Oji announced that Iran has comprehensive plans for gas storage.

He said studies have been conducted on more than 200 storage facilities, 40 of which have been diagnosed to be proper.
