Spokesman: Iran's Nuclear Activities Transparent, Peaceful

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Seyed Abbas Araqchi once again described the country’s nuclear activities as transparent and peaceful, and noted that all of nuclear activities and facilities are under the full supervision of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

“Iran’s nuclear activities are completely transparent and peaceful, and our country’s entire nuclear facilities and activities are continuously being monitored by the agency (IAEA),” Araqchi said on Saturday.

His comments were made in reaction to a statement by French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius on Tuesday in which he called on Iran to take concrete actions in response to international concerns over its nuclear program.

The spokesperson further added that Iran's policy is to use peaceful nuclear energy for scientific and economic development within the framework of the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).

In relevant remarks, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said recently that his country has never been after a nuclear weapon as it would threaten Iran's security, but added that Iran would not give up its right to use nuclear energy for peaceful purposes.

"We consider the possession of nuclear arms doesn't conform with the interests of the country and threatens the security of Iran," Zarif said.

The United States, Israel and some of their European allies have claimed that Iran's peaceful nuclear energy activities might be a cover for a weaponization program.

Iran, however, rejects the allegations, arguing that as a committed signatory to the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and a member of the IAEA, it has the right to use nuclear technology for peaceful purposes.
