Syrian Army Continues ‘Capital Shield’ Operation against Terrorists

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The Syrian army is pushing ahead with a massive operation to dislodge the terrorists from around capital amid mounting pressure by certain western states over the recent chemical weapons attack near Damascus.

The Syrian army announced that it has targeted terrorist strongholds in Jobar, al-Muazmiyeh and al-Sabiniyeh neighborhoods near Damascus.

It also said that Syrian troops have formed strong security zone around the capital after they attacked rebels strongholds in the town of Doma.

The Syrian army has so far managed to take control of over 40% of al-Muazmiyah district and kill more than 30% of the armed terrorists in that region, al-Alam news network reported, quoting a Syrian army official.

The development came as certain western states are exerting pressure on the Syrian government over the recent chemical weapons attack near Damascus.

On Wednesday a gas attack in Damascus suburbs was reported by opposition activists. It allegedly killed anywhere between ‘dozens’ to ‘1,300’, according to conflicting reports.

Next day the UN inspectors requested access to the site “without delays” in order to investigate the alleged use of chemical weapons in attacks in the country.

The Syrian government said that it was ready to engage in “maximum” cooperation with UN experts, according to Russia’s foreign ministry.

The UN investigative team entered the country last Sunday. Three weeks ago an agreement was reached with Syrian President Bashar Assad’s government regarding the three different locations that were to be examined by the mission.

Earlier Syrian TV reported that Syrian army soldiers found chemical agents when they entered rebel tunnels in Damascus suburb of Jobar, adding that some of them started suffocating.

Soldiers "entered the terrorists’ tunnels and saw chemical agents," state television said.

"In some cases, soldiers started suffocating while entering Jobar," it said.
