Syria Army Seizes Full Control of Key District in Eastern Aleppo
DAMASCUS (Tasnim) – Syrian troops on Saturday managed to seize a strategic neighborhood in the northwestern city of Aleppo after fierce clashes with Takfiri terrorists.
According to Tasnim dispatches, the army troops and their allies stepped up their attacks against terrorist groups from different directions in east of Aleppo on Saturday, and succeeded in wresting control of the key district of Masaken Hanano.
Large groups of the militants were killed and a number of their vehicles destroyed in the clashes.
Recapture of the district came days after government forces and their allies launched an offensive in the area in deadly street battles.
The army said troops "have seized full control" of the eastern district in Syria's largest city, AP reported.
The so-called Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said troops now control most of the district, adding that Hanano was the first Aleppo neighborhood to fall into the hands of Takfiri militants in 2012.
Syria has been gripped by civil war since March 2011 with various terrorist groups, including Daesh (also known as ISIS or ISIL), currently controlling parts of it.
According to a report by the Syrian Center for Policy Research, the conflict has claimed the lives of over 470,000 people, injured 1.9 million others, and displaced nearly half of the country’s pre-war population of about 23 million within or beyond its borders.
