Iran Eager for Closer Ties with Romania

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian President Hassan Rouhani expressed hopes for the enhancement of bilateral relations with Romania given the good record of ties and the political will on part of the both sides.

In a message to his Romanian counterpart Klaus Iohannis on Thursday, President Rouhani congratulated the people and government of Romania on the European country’s national day.

Hailing the record of bilateral relations and the existing political will, the Iranian president hoped for the expansion of Tehran-Bucharest relations in the political, economic and cultural areas.

Romania’s national day, known as the Great Union Day, falls on December 1. It commemorates the assembly of the delegates of ethnic Romanians held in Alba Iulia in 1918.

In November, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif paid a visit to Romania and signed two memorandums of understanding (MoUs) with his Romanian counterpart after a round of diplomatic talks.

The top Iranian diplomat had also a meeting with Romania’s Prime Minister Dacian Ciolos, and discussed closer bilateral cooperation in various fields, from energy to banking ties.
