Domestic Issues Should Not Undermine JCPOA: Chinese FM
BEIJING (Tasnim) – Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi called for all parties to the JCPOA, the July 2015 nuclear deal between Iran and world powers, to meet their obligations, stressing that internal affairs of countries should not have a negative impact on implementation of the multilateral agreement
The Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) is a multilateral document endorsed by the United Nations Security Council, Yi said in a Monday meeting with Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif in Beijing, according to Tasnim dispatches.
The Chinese top diplomat added that internal developments of the parties to the JCPOA should not undermine the agreement.
His comments came after the US Senate voted on Thursday to extend the Iran Sanctions Act (ISA) for another decade. The bill was passed by the House of Representatives nearly unanimously in November, and congressional aides said they expected Obama would sign it.
Iranian officials have underlined that implementation of the legislation would be a clear breach of the JCPOA, the nuclear agreement between Iran and the Group 5+1 (Russia, China, the US, Britain, France and Germany) that came into force in January.
Elsewhere in his remarks, the Chinese foreign minister emphasized that his country supports Iran’s membership in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO).
