ISA Becomes Law without Obama Signature: White House
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – White House Spokesman Josh Earnest said US President Barack Obama has declined to sign Iran Sanctions Act (ISA), but has let it become law anyway.
White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest said Obama is letting it become law without his signature, AP reported on Thursday.
He further said that Obama retains authority to waive all nuclear sanctions lifted as part of last year’s nuclear deal between Tehran and world powers.
Obama faced a midnight deadline to sign the 10-year renewal of the decades-old sanctions law.
Earlier this month, the US Senate voted 99-0 to extend the ISA for another decade.
The bill was passed by the House of Representatives nearly unanimously in November, and congressional aides said they expected Obama would sign it.
Iranian President Hassan Rouhani has warned that implementation of ISA will constitute a “clear and flagrant violation of the JCPOA” and draw a “very harsh reaction” from Tehran.
