Loss of JCPOA Unforgivable, Russia Says

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Russia said on Thursday that it would be unforgivable if last year’s nuclear agreement between Tehran and world powers is dismantled.

In a statement on Thursday, Russia's Foreign Ministry said loss of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) will be unforgivable, the Interfax news agency reported.

The ministry also said it was disappointed by plans by the United States to extend the Iran Sanctions Act (ISA) for another 10 years.

The statement came after White House Spokesman Josh Earnest said recently that US President Barack Obama had declined to sign the ISA, but let it become law anyway.

He further said that Obama retains authority to waive all nuclear sanctions lifted as part of the deal.

Iran and the Group 5+1 (Russia, China, the US, Britain, France and Germany) reached the nuclear deal in July 2015 and implemented it in January this year.

While Tehran has fulfilled all of its commitments under the deal, Washington has failed to fully carry out its undertakings.

Earlier this month, the US Senate voted 99-0 to extend the ISA for another decade.

The bill was passed by the House of Representatives nearly unanimously in November, and congressional aides said they expected Obama would sign it.

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani has warned that implementation of ISA will constitute a “clear and flagrant violation of the JCPOA” and draw a “very harsh reaction” from Tehran.
