Iran Condemns Truck Attack in Berlin
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran’s Foreign Ministry condemned a “terrorist attack” in the German capital of Berlin in which a truck plowed into a crowded Christmas market on Monday evening, killing 12 people and injuring 48 others.
Expressing condolences to families of the victims, Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Bahram Qassemi hoped for an end to such “bitter incidents.”
The spokesman also reaffirmed Iran’s commitment to countering extremism and violence and called on all nations and governments to unite in fighting against terrorism “ceaselessly, purposefully and genuinely.”
The truck smashed into wooden huts at the foot of the Kaiser Wilhelm memorial church, one of west Berlin’s most famous landmarks. Forty-eight people were injured, 18 severely.
On Tuesday, Germany said a man arrested on suspicion of killing people in the incident was an asylum-seeker.
Interior Minister Thomas de Maiziere said the arrested man, who denied involvement, was probably from Pakistan and was in the process of applying for asylum. A security source said he was 23 years old, was known to police for committing minor offences, and had been staying at a refugee center in the now defunct Tempelhof airport.
