Syrian PM Due in Tehran Tuesday

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Syrian Prime Minister Imad Khamis is scheduled to pay a visit to Tehran on Tuesday for talks with Iranian officials.

Khamis is planned to hold meetings with senior Iranian officials, including Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) Ali Shamkhani during his stay in Tehran.

They are expected to discuss the latest developments in Syria and the region as well as expansion of bilateral ties between Tehran and Damascus.

The Syrian prime minister’s visit to Tehran comes just over a week after a trip by Shamkhani to Damascus, during which the senior Iranian official held talks with Syrian President Bashar Assad as well as Major General Ali Mamlouk, the head of the Arab country’s National Security Bureau.

Syria has been gripped by civil war since March 2011 with various terrorist groups currently controlling parts of it.

According to a report by the Syrian Center for Policy Research, the conflict has claimed the lives of over 470,000 people, injured 1.9 million others, and displaced nearly half of the country’s pre-war population of about 23 million within or beyond its borders.

In the meantime, Iran has remained a close ally of Syria and supports its legitimate government in the face of foreign-backed militancy.

Tehran insists that the Syrian nation is the only side that has the right to shape the future of its own country, rejecting foreign intervention with the use of force.
