Iranian, Syrian Lawmakers Underline Resistance against War Threats
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Senior lawmakers from Iran and Syria discussed the ways to counter threats of military action made by westerners against Damascus, and underscored the importance of resistance as the main factor for winning a victory in Syria’s fierce battle against foreign-backed rebels.
During a meeting held in Damascus on Saturday, Chairman of Iranian Parliament's National Security and Foreign Policy Commission Alaeddin Boroujerdi and Syria’s Parliament Speaker Mohammad Jihad al-Laham discussed ways to confront a possible foreign military intervention in Syria.
The meeting came after an Iranian parliamentary delegation arrived in Damascus on Saturday to discuss the ways out of Syria’s current conditions and also to convey Iran’s message of support to the Syrian nation.
Laham stressed that US war rhetoric would not "intimidate" Syria into giving in to western bullying, adding that Syria was "fully prepared" to face any aggression and that it would be victorious in any showdown thanks to support from its regional and international friends.
Boroujerdi, for his part, cautioned against the dire consequences of any foreign military intervention in Syria,which he said would not be limited to the Syrian borders, and reiterated Tehran’s strong opposition to US threats against the country.
He also expressed Iran's full support for the Syrian government and nation, saying Iran is ready to render any help to boost Syria's resistance power.
The visiting Iranian parliamentarians are scheduled to separately meet with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, Prime Minister Wael al-Halqi, and the country's Foreign Minister Walid Muallem before leaving Damascus for Lebanon.
The war rhetoric against Syria intensified after foreign-backed opposition forces accused President Bashar al-Assad’s government of having launched a chemical attack on militant strongholds in the suburbs of Damascus on August 21, a line that has been used by some western countries as the pretext for a possible military action against Syria.
