Iran Backs UN Peace Efforts in Afghanistan

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran’s Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif expressed the country’s support for the United Nations initiatives for peace and stability in Afghanistan.

In a meeting with special representative for the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA), held in Tehran on Sunday, Foreign Minister Zarif said Iran supports all UN initiatives for the establishment of peace in Afghanistan.

Voicing Iran’s support for the national unity government of Afghanistan, Zarif also noted that Tehran’s efforts are focused on ensuring stability in the neighboring country.

For his part, Tadamichi Yamamoto called on Iran to keep playing its constructive role in the line of efforts to create peace and stability in Afghanistan.

He also deplored the rising Afghan civilian death toll following the withdrawal of foreign military forces, despite the Kabul government’s attempts over the past year and a half.

Iranian officials have consistently urged peace and stability in the eastern neighbor and have voiced readiness to help the Afghan nation in all fields.

In January 2016, Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei reiterated Iran’s support for Afghanistan, saying the Islamic Republic regards peace and security in the neighboring country as its own.
