Electronic Ballot Boxes Ready for Iran’s City Council Elections

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran has prepared 11,600 electronic voting machines for the 5th City and Village Councils elections, slated for May, an official announced.

Qassem Mirzaee Nekou, member of a monitoring team overseeing the polls, told Tasnim on Thursday that 11,000 machines will be used for the upcoming City and Village Councils elections, and the other 600 electronic ballot boxes will be kept in reserve.

Iran’s Interior Ministry unveiled the first electronic voting machine in November 2015.

Now with authorization from the Guardian Council, the digital boxes will come on stream for the City and Village Councils elections scheduled to be held simultaneously with the presidential election on May 19.

A lawmaker told Tasnim earlier that registration of candidates for the City and Village Councils will start on March 13.

Members of the councils across Iran are elected by public vote for a 4-year term.

According to article 7 of the Iranian Constitution, the local councils, together with the parliament, are "decision-making and administrative organs of the State".
