Lawmaker Highlights Lebanon’s Vital Role in Region

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Lebanon can play an important role in regional security, chairman of the Iranian parliament's national security and foreign policy commission said.

During a Monday meeting with Lebanese Prime Minister-designate Tammam Salam in Beirut, Alaeddin Boroujerdi described the Arab country as having a great role in regional security, saying Lebanon’s prominent role will materialize through “unity and solidarity.”

The meeting came after an Iranian parliamentary delegation arrived in Beirut to discuss regional developments with Lebanese officials and also to convey Iran’s message of support for Lebanon’s territorial integrity and national unity.

Salam, for his part, touched on the critical conditions in the Middle East , saying that extremism and sectarian tensions can only serve the interests of Israel.

The Iranian parliamentary delegation, headed by Boroujerdi, made official visits to Syria and Lebanon this week to confer on the latest developments with leaders of these two countries.

Earlier on Saturday, the delegation had a meeting with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in Damascus.

During the visit, Boroujerdi had voiced Tehran’s strong opposition to any attack or war against Syria.

He also expressed Iran's full support for the Syrian government and nation, saying Iran is ready to render any help to boost Syria's resistance power.

The war rhetoric against Syria intensified after foreign-backed opposition forces accused President Bashar al-Assad’s government of having launched a chemical attack on militant strongholds in the suburbs of Damascus on August 21, a line that has been used by some western countries as the pretext for a possible military action against Syria.
