Iranian Diplomat, UN Envoy Discuss Restoration of Stability to Iraq
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for Arab and African Affairs Hossein Jaberi Ansari held talks with visiting UN Special Representative for Iraq Jan Kubis on a range of issues, including the latest efforts to restore stability to the Arab country.
In the meeting held in Tehran on Monday evening, Kubis briefed Jaberi Ansari on the latest situation in Iraq and opportunities and challenges facing the country and described the fight against terrorism as the main priority of all Iraqi sides.
He further highlighted the variety of tribes in Iraq and stressed the need to preserve unity among all political and ethnic groups.
The Iranian deputy foreign minister, for his part, expressed concerns over the spread of terrorism and said the phenomenon is the main problem of Iraq, the region and the world.
He further underlined the importance of efforts to strengthen the central government in Iraq and preserve unity and territorial integrity of the Arab country.
Iraq has been facing the growing threat of terrorism, mainly posed by Daesh (ISIL or ISIS) terrorist group.
Daesh militants made swift advances in much of northern and western Iraq over the summer 2014, after capturing large swaths of northern Syria.
However, a combination of concentrated attacks by the Iraqi military and the volunteer forces, who rushed to take arms after top Iraqi cleric Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani issued a fatwa calling for fight against the militants, have blunted the edge of Daesh offensive.
Amid tensions in Iraq, Iran is known as the first country to help the Arab country and has always voiced support for Iraq’s solidarity and prosperity.
