Leader: US Definitely to Emerge Loser from Syria Crisis

“We believe the Americans are wrong and they are making a mistake in (regards with) Syria, and as a result they would be dealt a blow and definitely lose,” Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei said in his meeting with the members of the Experts Assembly.

“The Americans are raising the humanitarian issues while they have the Guantanamo Bay detention facility and Abu Ghraib prison (scandals) in their dossier, and while they connived at Saddam Hussain's use of chemical weapons against his own people and the Iranian citizens, and had many innocent people in Afghanistan, Pakistan and Iraq killed,” Ayatollah Khamenei said.

"The main objective behind the presence of the arrogance in the region is to dominate it ... and it wants to wipe out any resistence against such a presence," the Leader stated, but added that it will not be able to defeat the resistance front.

Elsewhere in his remarks, the Leader rejected the perception that the Islamic Awakening is on the wane, saying it was not a purely political phenomenon dependent on certain figures, but instead a state of self-confidence and reliance on Islam which has spread across the Islamic world.

“The prevailing conditions in the region that we witness are, in fact, the reaction of the global arrogance, led by the Americans, to the Islamic Awakening,” the Supreme Leader added.

The Leader had earlier warned the US against the consequences of military adventurism in Syria. “If such a move (possible attack on Syria) takes place, the Americans will surely suffer losses just like what they underwent in Iraq and Afghanistan,” Ayatollah Khamenei said last month.

The US has been pushing for military action on Syria , after foreign-backed opposition forces accused President Bashar al-Assad’s government of carrying out a chemical attack on militant strongholds in the suburbs of Damascus on August 21.

The Syrian government denies any involvement and blames rebels for the attack.

Ayatollah Khamenei also touched on the recent developments in Egypt and said,"if there were anti-Israeli slogans and the officials did not fall for US promises," there would not be a reversal of positions in Egypt, as a "dictator who humiliated" the country is set free and those elected by people are thrown in jail and put on trial.

"If the elected officials in Egypt had insisted on principles, those protesters who stood against them would have come to their side," the Leader added.

On August 14, Egyptian security forces forcibly removed two sit-in camps, killing hundreds of pro-Mursi protesters who wanted him to be reinstated. The lethal crackdown was followed by deadly clashed two days later, in which more than 170 people were killed.

Mohamed Mursi who had been elected president last year was ousted by the army on July 3. Mursi who has been in detention for more than two months at a secret location, and has had hundreds of his supporters detained, now must stand trial for inciting murder and violence.

And Egypt's former dictator Hosni Mubarak who was overthrown in a popular uprising in early 2011 and sentenced to life in jail last year, was released on bail last month -- although he is still under house arrest.
