Iran, Azerbaijan Link Indian Ocean to Europe: President Rouhani

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian President Hassan Rouhani hailed the suitable transit route that Iran and the Republic of Azerbaijan provide for linking the Indian Ocean to European countries.

“The Republic of Azerbaijan is a gateway linking Iran with the Caucasus and Europe, and Iran, reciprocally, is a very good gateway linking the Republic of Azerbaijan to southern regions, the Sea of Oman and the Indian Ocean,” President Rouhani said at a meeting in Tehran on Sunday of Iran-Azerbaijan high-ranking delegations, co-chaired by himself and his Azeri counterpart.

The Iranian president also called for swift implementation of the previous agreements between Tehran and Baku.

For his part, Azeri President Ilham Aliyev stressed the need for enhancement of the ties between the two neighbors, which he said have reached the highest level over the past few years.

He also called for continued cooperation with Iran on resolving the Caspian Sea’s environmental problems.

At the conclusion of the joint meeting, the two countries signed two memorandums of understanding.

Heading a high-ranking delegation, the Azeri president arrived in Tehran on Sunday morning for an official visit.
