Bahrainis to Defend Sheikh Qassim At Any Cost

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The people of Bahrain will continue to support the spiritual leader of the country’s Shiite majority Sheikh Isa Ahmed Qassim, the representative of the prominent cleric said.

Speaking to Tasnim, Sheikh Abdullah Daqaq said measures taken by the ruling regime against Sheikh Qassim will fail to undermine the top cleric’s status among the people of the country.

The Bahraini nation will not have their hands tied but will defend Sheikh Qassim at any cost, he underlined.

The remarks came as Bahraini youths continue sit-ins in front of Sheikh Qassim’s house in the restive village of Diraz to express their solidarity with the cleric.

The Bahraini regime announced on June 20, 2016, that it had revoked the citizenship of Sheikh Qassim.

The regime later said it would put the senior cleric on trial on charges of “illegal fund collections, money laundering and helping terrorism”.

The trial of Sheikh Qassim has been adjourned several times as the prominent cleric has refused to appear in court.

Bahrain, a close ally of the US in the Persian Gulf region, has been witnessing almost daily protests against the ruling Al Khalifa dynasty since early 2011, with Manama using heavy-handed measures in an attempt to crush the demonstrations.

Scores of Bahrainis have been killed and hundreds of others injured and arrested in the ongoing crackdown on the peaceful demonstrations.
