Speaker Calls for Expansion of Iran-Turkmenistan Ties

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran’s Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani hailed the great strides made by Iran and Turkmenistan to enhance bilateral ties, and called for establishment of a parliamentary friendship group for boosting relations between the two neighboring countries.

“We hope that after formation of a parliamentary friendship group , the economic relations between the two countries will increase remarkably,” Larijani said on Friday, addressing Turkmen lawmakers in the country’s parliament in Ashgabat.

Iran and Turkmenistan have so far signed more than 100 cooperation agreements in economic, cultural and academic fields, evidence both countries are willing to enhance their cooperation, Larijani said.

Heading a high-ranking delegation, Larijani is in Turkmen capital city of Ashgabat for an official three-day visit aimed at expanding ties between the two neighbors.

In a relevant development on August 5, Iran’s President Hassan Rouhani had also praised the close ties between Iran and Turkmenistan, and emphasized the need for further enhancement of bilateral relations between the two nations.

In a meeting with his Turkmen counterpart Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow at the time, President Rouhani pointed to amicable relations between Tehran and Ashgabat, saying, “Bilateral relations in economic, political and cultural fields will further develop in the future.”
