Speaker Calls on West to Avoid “Syria Minefield”

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – As the US is trying to drum up support for a possible strike on Syria, Iran's parliament speaker has warned western governments against any reckless move, saying entering the "Syrian minefield" could prove disastrous for the invaders.

“Westerners had better not rush into a minefield in vain, as such an involvement will definitely bring about problems for them in the not too distant future. ...Such crisis-making may be simple in the beginning, but it will have a very hellish ending for them (western countries),” Ali Larijani said on Sunday, addressing a gathering of Iranian residents in Turkmenistan capital city of Ashgabat.

He also blamed western countries for their "tactical approach" to terrorism, saying they spawned an extremist, radical current, which now they are unable to tame.

"The western powers sent all these terrorists to produce democracy in Syria, as they dreaded the Islamic Awakening in the region and needed to head off this trend, so they created this environment," Larijani added. "We believe democracy is a national demand and people should create it. It is not brought about through tanks and canons."

Neither in Syria, nor in Bahrain would democracy prevail through coercion, as it requires “political and rational dialogues”, he pointed out.

Larijani called for concerted effort by the international community to help avert military involvement in Syria, warning the westren countries that "the fire in the region could certainly rage out of their control."

US escalating war rhetoric against Syria has drawn condemnation from several Iranian officials in recent days.

On August 28, Commander of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) Major General Mohammad Ali Jafari warned the US about severe consequences of any military intervention in Syria, and stressed that the possible war in Syria will result in imminent destruction of the Zionist regime of Israel.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with Tasnim on Wednesday evening, the IRGC commander pointed to the recent US war rhetoric against Syria, and stated that Washington and its allies have resorted to “direct military threat” against Damascus after the Syrian nation defeated their “proxy war scenario”.

“Despite their bitter experiences in Iraq and Afghanistan, Americans will complete their consecutive failures and experience the most shameful historic defeat if they conduct military action against Syria,” he said at the time.

“And” Jafari underlined “Syria will turn into a more dangerous and deadly battlefield than Vietnam War, and, in fact, Syria will become the second Vietnam for the US.”
