Zarif Congratulates Iranian Woman Acquitted of Murder in India

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif offered his congratulations to Narges Kalbasi, a charity donor who has recently been cleared of murder charges following a lengthy court battle in India.

In a post on his Instagram page on Saturday, Zarif congratulated the Iranian-British philanthropist on her acquittal and appreciated her patience and resistance.

Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Bahram Qassemi also hailed the Indian court’s verdict.

“I’m pleased that non-stop efforts made by the country’s diplomatic apparatus, headed by Mr Zarif, have borne fruit and Ms Narges Kalbasi was cleared of all charges leveled against her,” Qassemi said.

Kalbasi had announced earlier that she had been acquitted of all her charges by an Indian appeals court.

She has also been given the right by the court to seek compensation for the hardships she has gone through since 2014, when she was barred from leaving India amid her court battle.

Kalbasi had been convicted of “involuntary manslaughter” in 2014, when a five-year-old boy disappeared during a riverside picnic organized by the 28-year-old charity worker in India’s eastern Odisha State.
