Iran’s Zarif Meets Top Iraqi Religious Leaders

TEHRAN (Tasnim) - Iran’s foreign minister, who is in Iraq on his first foreign trip after taking office in August, met with a number of religious leaders in the Iraqi holy city of Najaf on Monday.

Mohammad Javad Zarif met with Ayatollah Bashir Najafi, Ayatollah Mohammad Eshaq Fayaz and Ayatollah Mohammad Saeed Hakim, senior Shiite scholars, in the city of Najaf, some 160 kilometers south of capital Baghdad.

Zarif also met Grand Ayatollah Ali Sistani in his residence in the city.

Zarif, heading a high-ranking delegation, has travelled to Iraq to meet a number of senior Iraqi officials and discuss the latest regional developments with them.

Iran and Iraq, the two neighboring countries in the Middle East, share common concerns, especially over the Syrian upheavals.

He will return to Tehran from Najaf later today.
