Iranian Airline Inks Deal with Boeing to Buy 60 Planes

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran Aseman Airlines signed a major agreement with US aircraft maker Boeing to purchase 60 passenger jets.

Nearly four months after Iran Air finalized a deal with Boeing to purchase 80 passenger planes, Aseman Airlines signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) with the US giant to buy 60 airplanes.

The delivery of the first purchased airplane to the Aseman Airlines would take place in 2019, according to the airline.

Also in a statement on Tuesday, Boeing confirmed that it had signed an agreement with Aseman Airlines on its intention to purchase 30 Boeing 737 MAX airplanes.

"Boeing confirms the signing of a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) with Iran Aseman Airlines, expressing the airline’s intent to purchase 30 Boeing 737 MAX airplanes with a list price value of $3 billion. The agreement also provides the airline with purchase rights for 30 additional 737 MAXs," the US company said in the statement.

Back in December, the chairman of Iran Air said the flag carrier had finalized an initial deal with Boeing to purchase 80 passenger planes.

“Today, we signed a document with Boeing to buy 80 planes within 10 years,” Farhad Parvaresh said during the signing ceremony in Tehran on December 11.

He added that the first deliveries are expected in 2018.

The agreement envisaged the purchase of 50 twinjet narrow-body Boeing 737 planes and 30 long-range wide-body Boeing 777 aircraft at a total cost of $16.6 billion.

Iran signed the initial plane purchase agreement with Boeing earlier in 2016, following the removal of anti-Iran sanctions with the coming into force of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

The US Treasury Department has given the green light to Boeing to sell planes to Iran.
