President: Iran Ready for Counter-Terrorism Cooperation with Russia

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian President Hassan Rouhani strongly condemned the recent deadly terrorist attack in Russia’s Saint Petersburg metro station, and said Tehran is prepared to cooperate with Moscow in the fight against terrorism.

In a message to his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, on Tuesday, President Rouhani extended his and the Iranian people’s “deepest” sympathies to the Russian people and government over the terrorist incident, which led to the deaths and injuries of a number of innocent people.

“As it was raised in the recent talks with you in Moscow, eradication of all forms of terrorism regardless of its motives requires collective efforts by the international community and cooperation among all countries to counter the intellectual origin of these criminal groups and their supporters,” Rouhani said.

The president added that, accordingly, Iran is ready for any kind of cooperation with the Russian government in this field.

On Monday, a bomb blast in the St Petersburg metro system killed at least 14 people and wounded dozens more.

An unidentified explosive device went off on a train after leaving Sennaya Ploshchad station and heading to the Technology Institute station, Russia’s National Anti-Terrorist Committee said.

Russian security agencies found and defused a second explosive device at the Ploschad Vosstaniya station, one of the city’s busiest stations, the committee also said.
