Zarif: Unilateral Moves, Like US Strike on Syria, Should be Averted

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran’s Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif called for an investigation to discover the truth behind a chemical attack in the Syrian town of Khan Shaykhun to prevent the recurrence of unilateral actions such as the US military attack on Syria.

In a meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov in Moscow on Friday, Zarif described the suspicious chemical attack near Idlib as an excuse for the US military action against Syria.

The truth behind the gas attack must be discovered in order to prevent the unilateral actions, like the US measure, in future, the Iranian minister underlined.

Zarif arrived in Moscow on Friday morning for what he called the necessity for a meeting to coordinate policies between Iran, Russia, and Syria, as three allies, in the wake of the April 7 US attack, during which American warships fired missiles on the Syrian government’s Shayrat Airfield near Homs.

Syria has been gripped by civil war since March 2011 with various terrorist groups, including Daesh (also known as ISIS or ISIL), controlling parts of it.

Meanwhile, Iran and Russia have formed an alliance in the fight against terrorists, with both supporting the Damascus government against foreign-backed militancy.
