Larijani Urges Efforts to Boost Iran-Pakistan Trade

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani underlined the importance of stronger economic ties between Tehran and Islamabad, calling for efforts to raise the value of annual trade between the two neighbors to $5 billion.

Speaking to reporters at a joint press conference with his Pakistani counterpart, Sardar Ayaz Sadiq, in Tehran on Saturday, Larijani described his talks with Sadiq earlier in the day as “very constructive” and said the meeting mostly focused on trade relations between the two countries.

In order to increase the bilateral trade to $5bln various, efficient mechanisms are needed, he said, adding that some steps have been taken in that direction.

Larijani went on to say that it has been agreed that the two countries work to further facilitate bilateral trade.

In a visit to Pakistan earlier this year, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani met with Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and underlined the necessity for closer cooperation between the two neighboring countries in economic fields.

Back in 2016, high-ranking officials from the two countries signed six memorandums of understanding (MoUs) to strengthen bilateral cooperation in various areas, including health, commerce, security and foreign services.

The documents were signed in a ceremony in Islamabad, attended by Rouhani and Sharif, after a meeting between the two countries’ delegations.
