Lawmaker: Iran to Use All Diplomatic Capacity to Resolve Syria Crisis

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – An Iranian legislator said Thursday that Iran will use all its diplomatic capacity to peacefully resolve the prolonged crisis in Syria.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran will employ its entire diplomatic potentials to resolve the Syrian crisis,” Mohammad Hassan Asafari told Tasnim News Agency today.

The member of the Iranian Parliament’s National Security and Foreign Policy Commission added that the United Nations should come up with a practical initiative to help contain the Syrian crisis, which can threaten regional peace and stability.

He also called on the US to pursue a diplomatic course vis-a-vis Syria and warned against any military move.

“The regional countries, particularly Russia and Iran will not permit the US to interfere in Syria, and in case the US decides to use military force against Syria, it will face the reaction of the resistance front and the regional countries," he said.

The US has been pressing for military action on Syria since a suspected chemical weapons attack in the suburbs of Damascus on August 21, which it blamed on the forces loyal to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

The government of Syria has denied involvement and said the rebels were responsible.

Russia, which has blocked US and British efforts to get a United Nations resolution to take action against Syria, appeared to open a path toward a solution Monday when it suggested a plan for Damascus to hand over its chemical weapons.

And US President Barack Obama said he would put off plans for a military strike against Syria if the country agrees to place its chemical weapons stockpile under international control. The diplomatic moves prompted US President Barack Obama to put off military action against Syria.
